Scaffold Board Shelving!

I wanted to share some details about our scaffold board shelving and why you might prefer the reclaimed rustic options or the sleek new cleaner version we offer using not just our reclaimed boards but new ones too. I thought we would let you in on some important facts, tips and tricks of the trade to achieve the perfect shelf!

  • Why should I buy or make a shelf out of scaffolding boards?
  • What brackets will work?
  • What finish should I use?
  • How much sanding should I do?
  • Will it hold enough weight?
  • Will these work on a plasterboard wall and what fixing should I use?

These inquiries come up often. Important questions that we're happy to address.

My Scaffolding boards have such strong quality's, rustic ruggedness, and potential to become unique homeware!

They just ooze character and they are the most sustainable shelf you could possibly buy. What's more perfect, than resurrecting a scaffolding board to make for a lovely shelf!

Not only can our shelves hold over 100kgs of weight but they just have a certain look about them, one that you cannot get from any other timber on the market! Making any statement necessary for any home environment. We even have the most amazing coloured shelf brackets to add some wild or subtle tones to your home.

We have 5 different bracket sizes to suit many different purposes. 110mm / 165mm / 225mm (Standard scaffold board size)  / 300mm  / 440mm (Double scaffold board)

The reason behind my passion for creating and selling these amazing items. (Pardon any unique Somerset phrasing)

I began selling my scaffolding boards to locals during the Covid lockdown phase, with everyone stuck at home, many saw it as a chance to tackle diy projects. Turns out, my boards were a hit! People wanted them for Shelves / Tables / Worktops and more. That's when I reached out to my friend Tom for help. 4 Years on and here we are! People were always asking what they should use to finish the scaffolding boards.

What Finish Should I Use?

When it comes to finishing the scaffold board. I decided to offer a few variations, but trying to keep it simple really by offering a Light (Natural)/ Medium (Antique) / Dark (Jacobean) and some special techniques to offer some really vibrant and unique stand out finishes, which really offer something different!

We decided to offer the sanded board with no finish so you can choose the finish yourself. Trying to cater for everyone with this product can be difficult but we feel that we have thought of everyone.

Sanding!

Sanding the scaffolding board is purely down to how you want this to look. There is no right or wrong technique, just keep in mind that the more you sand, the smoother and cleaner this will look and feel. I like lots of character and nice clean edges! We use some really cheap sanders (do not be fooled thinking you need to buy a really expensive sander) I have had all types of expensive tools and none of them have lasted doing the work we do with them! Here is a link to the sander we use. We have varying sanding grits from 40 - 320 depending on what we are making. Shelving we usually finish with a 120-180 grit leaving bags of character and surface smooth enough to clean.

Wall Fixings!

This one is a common question that we get a lot. I do apologise that we can't offer the specific plasterboard fixing to our shelf kits, Purely because they are an expensive little addition that we feel would be best for you to source, everyone has a different surface to hang their shelving on. Our wall plugs supplied with all shelf kits are plasterboard suited / masonry suited and wood. They are an all round option that we thought would be best for our shelf kit options. Please see some links to wall plugs that are specific to plasterboard and most retailers sell these.

For plasterboard walls. I would advise using a bracket shelf option rather than our floating shelf option as these will offer more support! The hanging bracket gives a sleek floating look, so this would be a good alternative to the floating shelf.
