Scaffold Boards - Reclaimed and New

Don't panic! It may look like there's a lot of options below for a humble scaffold board, but it's not as confusing as it may at first seem. We have found that our different customers can end up requiring a number of variables on the simple scaffolding board, so we've tried to offer something for everyone below. Here's a quick guide to the different options...

Reclaimed vs New

A reclaimed scaffold board is one which comes from stock used in actual scaffolding. Great for extra character and therefore tend to be what people are looking for when they're after that classic, rustic look. Newer boards are more uniform, clean, and therefore more sought after by makers, as they are suited to furniture and other similar uses.

Kiln dried vs not kiln dried:

Kiln dried scaffolding boards will have had their moisture content reduced. This is more suited to uses such as furniture making or worktops, giving a more stable board which is less likely to further crack or shrink, is necessary.

Unsanded, sanded or special:

- Unsanded scaffolding boards are the original and cheapest option, the scaffold board in it's original form. Great for larger quantities, landscaping, shelving etc, where a finished board is not needed
- Sanded boards are for those who want either a less rough board (hand sanded) or one with the bumps taken out too (machine sanded) then this may be a better option.
- Special boards are where we take the board to the next level. Here we offer options including a flame finish (where the wood is torched) or a coloured finish using specialist dyes.

Standard, "Narrow", "chunky", or "Planed".

Standard scaffolding boards are the original size - 225mm wide, 38mm thick.
- "Narrow" scaffolding boards are ripped for reduced width - 100mm wide, 38mm thick.
- "Chunky" scaffolding boards are a specialist board which are thicker than standard - 225mm wide, 63mm thick.                                                        - "Planed" scaffolding boards have been put through our 4 sided planer creating a new product of 210mm wide and choices of 30mm / 25mm thickness.

Jointed boards:

A jointed scaffolding board is one where two boards have been joined together to create a wider, single board. A standard scaffold board is 225mm width so this allows a board to be created with a width of 440mm. Jointed boards are available in both our standard and "Chunky" thicknesses

FAQ — The Scaff Shop

We work exclusively with scaffold boards – both reclaimed and new – sourced from the scaffolding industry. Around 40% of our reclaimed boards come from our own scaffolding company (The Scaff Co.), and the rest from trusted external sources. All boards are carefully graded, inspected and prepared in our workshop based in Frome, before being transformed into furniture and shelving.

We also stock scaffolding accessories including scaffolding tubes, fittings, brackets and fixings to complement our boards and help you complete your project. We have a zero-waste policy – any offcuts or unusable pieces are turned into kindling and also donated to local schools.

Yes. Our furniture pieces like desks, shelves, chopping boards and bespoke items are handcrafted in our workshop by our team of skilled machinists and joiners (including our wood machinist with over 30 years' experience). Each piece is individually selected, cut, sanded and finished by hand to ensure quality and character.

Our scaffold boards themselves – whether reclaimed or new – go through a careful preparation process: we grade and inspect each board, remove metal bands, air-dry or kiln-dry them to the right moisture content, then prep them for sale or transformation into furniture. While we use machinery for cutting and planing, the selection, finishing and quality control are all done by hand.So while we're not carving everything with chisels, every product that leaves our workshop has been handled, checked and finished by our experienced team – not mass-produced on an assembly line.

Yes. You can absolutely customise this product! Simply leave a note to us as you checkout or use our custom size tooling in the product to get the exact measurement you need.
